Unleashed is featured in the upcoming issue of Nintendo Power (should be hitting your doorstep in the coming days). The issue features the very first screenshots from the Nintendo Wii build of the game, which the kind people over at SonicEatsRings were able to scan the entire article. The article features a interview with producer Yoshihisa Hashimoto, which reveals quite a bit of new information on the game.
We get some new information on the recently mentioned combat of Sonic Unleashed, which will feature new gameplay elements using the motion sensor in the Wii remote and Nunchuck. The controllers will be used to design interactive combat sequences, which will feature a wide variety of combat styles using the Wii remote for different situations. We haven’t heard much of anything about the mysterious were-wolf Sonic version, could the combat features be related to the were-hog gameplay? When Nintendo Power asked about the possible gameplay changes from day to night, Yoshihisa Hashimoto mentions that they’ll remain a secret for now, though details will be revealed soon (possibly E3).
The good news for many Sonic fans (who like playing as Sonic) are that he is once again confirmed as the only playable character during the entire game, even though Yoshihisa Hashimoto makes sure to mention the game will feature various characters throughout. The storyline in Sonic Unleashed will not have any relation to past Sonic storylines featured in previous games.
We also finally get some type of information on boss battles, which the battle style will be original to the Wii version. The boss battles will make full use of the Wii remote, and as Yoshihisa Hashimoto says,“will be like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”
The article also confirms that Sonic Unleashed will not feature any type of multiplayer or online functionality, though it’s not mentioned if this is just for the Wii version or if all versions of the game will feature no online options. As mentioned before, the game will not use the new Hedgehog Engine, which will be used only for the Xbox 360/PS3 Sonic Unleashed builds. The Nintendo Wii and PS2 version’s of the game will use a pre-existing engine by Sega that will be improved for the game.
